Abstract
The speech first provides an overview of academic writing. Two issues — academic writing style and the writing problems of NNS writers — are raised and discussed. The speech then explicates the features of academic writing progressively, ranging from academic vocabulary, special grammatical usages, sentence variety, rhetoric, and finally to research papers. Examples are given to show how these features are linguistically realized. With respect to research papers, the speech focuses on the information structure of the major sections as well as reading and writing strategies for this academic genre.
